Law Professor: Innovation Is Being Hindered By CopyrightRutgers reports:
The methods by which people can obtain and share music and data have progressed, though progress may be slowing and future groundbreaking innovations may need to wait, as the next generation of technology is being stymied by the very copyright laws that seek to protect the industry, says Michael Carrier, a professor of law at Rutgers–Camden.
“There is not enough attention being given to the effect copyright law has on innovation,” Carrier says about the fight against copyright infringement and the attempt to extinguish every instance of piracy.
Carrier interviewed 31 CEOs, company founders, and vice-presidents from technology companies, the recording industry, and venture capital firms in his research, which claims that judicial decisions, private enforcement, and public dialogue ignore innovation and overemphasize the harms of copyright infringement.
