Top Ways to Boost Creativity

Remixed from a post by The Pacific Institute:

Do you want to know how to be more creative? Of course you do. Let's explore how to do just that with TabNabber's top tips to boost your creativity:

First, forget the idea that creativity is something we're born with. We've all heard the saying, "You either have it or you don't." "POPPY-CRAP!" we say. How you are raised and what you believe is a much bigger factor. Besides, no matter what you were born with or how you were brought up, your life is in your own hands and what you become is up to you.

Experience the new and different. The very fact that you're reading this now shows a willingness and openness to new ideas, which is essential to nurturing your creativity. Continue exposing yourself to new things - different types of music (naturally), art, books, people, places, and experiences – all the time. Traveling is a great way to do this. Those who frequently travel frequently experience novelty, and novelty forces you to be adaptive, keeps your mind sharp, prevents boredom, adds fuel to your creative tank and inspires innovation.

Embrace and make change happen. Nothing kills creativity quite like a repetitious routine, so add some stimulation by doing things differently. In fact, doing something differently is the very definition of creativity. So remix your routines if you want to be more creative.

Realize that everything that can be created already has been. Pure originality is a pervasive myth, as everything we consider new is simply the merging of previously unmixed ideas. So rather than trying to create something from nothing, think about how you can combine two or more ideas together.

Take a break. Walk away and do something completely unrelated. And don't stress about it - stress is another creativity killer. Trust in the power of your subconscious mind to keep working your creativity challenges even while your attention is elsewhere.

Find others whom you consider to be creative and spend some time with them. But beware, you could absorb some of their other qualities as well.

Just say "no-kay" (in moderation). Only if you're old enough to indulge, of course, a little nip of the caffeine, nicotine, wacky tobacky - or whatever your mind altering substance of choice - could be the spark you need to write a musical masterpiece. Or you could just get the munchies. Either way, you win!

Finally, an unconventional tip from entrepreneur Elon Musk: “Pay attention to negative feedback and solicit it, particularly from friends... Hardly anyone does that, and it’s incredibly helpful.”

If you have a tip for boosting creativity (or negative feedback) we'd love to hear it, let us have it at tabnabber@gmail.com!
