How We Remember Songs



"How do you remember a song — and why is it that a beginning pianist who forgets the middle of a melody needs to start over again to recall the tune?" ask brain scientists at Georgetown University, who claim to have answers to these questions.

The scientists found that learning new tunes utilizes two different areas of the brain, and required use of the brain's motor areas, which is also used to move muscles. One area of the brain learns the sequence while another area recalls it — and higher motor areas participate in both.
