Jonathan Cain - if that's you - thanks for writing this song. I grew up on R&B but I love not only this song but pretty much everything on the Journey Greatest Hits album. Awesome, incredible song.

The official sheet music published by "Weed High Nightmare Music" is how I recorded it for the original studio version (which is how Poobah shows it), but I have always played the right hand section live with full octave chords as shown below. I didn't use the higher octave notes on each chord in the original studio version because it sounded too full with the recording techniques we were using at the time, although this tab would be a good template for beginners to start out on and add the remaining notes as they progress.
Thanks to you fans for making this the #1 selling song in the history of iTunes (2 million +), and please visit our website to petition the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for our induction - http://www.journeymusic.com/home.
Thanks again, and be well, Jonathon.

I think Right! is....well, right. i play the same version, and have seen many tutorial versions of this song as this discusion in based on, as he said, and they sound like the actual song. Though the other version he seems to be talking about also works, i personaly dont like it.

Right, you are whacked! This does not sound like the real song, and you should stop talking about chords because you're just embarrassing yourself with your lack of knowledge in musical theory.

I know that there arnt block chords, i wasnt sure what he was reffering to as the 5 and no 5, i take it as given that chards are rarely like that, the chords are simply a guideline along which the song goes. As for the sheet music, yes, i have it too, and it does not sound like the actual song. The original tab this entire discusion is based on, sounds right when played. Listen to the song as i told Shamalamadingdong

I have the sheet music for this and the right hand part is exactly what Grand Poobah shows in their comment, below. Those are the "full" chords being played.

I dont think its clear what you are saying. It really doesn't make any sense. The shama- dude is right: fifth and "no 5" chords are real chords that are binary like what's in this tab with a root and a fifth (A5, B5, C5, etc.), and "no 5" chords are just the root and a third. There are no full chords in this tab. You keep talking about full chords and there are none in here. Maybe it would help if you explained what the "correct" and "original" version you are referring to are?

Yes, E major has G# in it.....i just said that....way to not pay attention. And when you say E5, thats not a chord, unless you ment basic chords, because a basic chord contains the root, 3rd, and 5th, If thats the case, its still right. E contains E, G#, and B. It has these in the original, and in the corrected. Then B contains B, D#, and F#. Once again in both. Back to E in the original, which sounds right. Then to A, which has A, C#, and E in both. so you see, i could continue naming the chords and what they contain, to show which is right, and the other is just easier, but whats the point. Lastly, for your "correct" version, you say it contains c# (minor, thats why its lowercase) it sounds completly different from the ACTUAL SONG, plus your version is also block chards, as far as i can see, so yours is easier. so why dont you take your chords for dummies and go cry in a corner listining to Journey

E Major haz G# in it. Deez cords iz jest E5 / B5 / E5 / A(no5) / E5 / B5 / B(no5) / A(no5). Dis iz eazier 2 play 4 beginerz. U not makin no sinse, RIGHT (u iz rong)! Git dee book "piano kords 4 dummys" and go look at dee reel sheet muzik. Dee rite cords iz E / B / C#m / A / E / B / G#m / A and iz hardur 2 play dat way so u must b a beginer wiff tin earz jest lookin' 2 mowf off.

The original is right, for all of thoes skeptics out there, the capital letter means its sharp, the lowercase means its natural. the key is E major (capital in this case means major, not that its sharp) so the 4 sharps are f, c, g, and d! so the original is right! The "corrected version" in one ive seen in many places, and is just the easy way to play it, the actual song uses the first...and in my opion, correct....version.

This is completely wrong. Measure 1 is not even right. The first 8 measures for the right hand are:

R5|G---G---G---G---|F---F---F---F---|
R5|e---e---e---e---|D---D---D---D---|
R4|--b---b---b---b-|--b---b---b---b-|

R5|e---e---e---e---|e---e---e---e---|
R5|C---C---C---C---|C---C---C---C---|
R4|--G---G---G---G-|--a---a---a---a-|

R5|G---G---G---G---|F---F---F---F---|
R5|e---e---e---e---|D---D---D---D---|
R4|--b---b---b---b-|--b---b---b---b-|

R5|----------------|e---e---e---e---|
R5|D---D---D---D---|C---C---C---C---|
R4|b---b---b---b---|--a---a---a---a-|
R4|--G---G---G---G-|----------------|

I you people weren't tone deaf you could hear it! There! Case Closed!

Um, music is never wrong, it's just different. It's technically written as if it were transposed into Eb Major, but it lacks accidentals to make it so. Thus, it is different :)

ok ive been on this site for about 2 minutes fir the first time and i know in 5 minutes of experience that this is right. for you nubs that think their all smart about piano if you are going to call people on shit get it right. so heres the point of this rant. a lower case letter in tabbing means its not sharp, and capital letters means the note is sharpened.
